This beautiful 4-volume set of “Lives of Game Animals” won Ernest Seton-Thompson the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences in 1928. Seton (1860 – 1946) was a Scots-Canadian (and naturalized U.S. citizen) who was a noted author, wildlife artist, founder of the Woodcraft Indians, and one of the founding pioneers of the Boy Scouts of American. The Seton Legacy Project has organized a major exhibition on Seton’s life and work opening at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe. This set of books is considered “the non-fiction master work of his career” with over 50 maps and 1500 illustrations completed by Seton as it is “An account of those Land Animals in America, north of the Mexican Border, which are considered “Game”, either because they have held the Attention of Sportsman, or receive the Protection of Law”.

Condition: This hardbound set was published from 1925 to 1928 by Doubleday, Doran and Company of New York and is in very good to excellent condition. Original pebbled cloth with gold gilt-decorated spines and a different animal embossed on the front cover of each volume. The bindings are tight on all volumes with slight edge wear along the top, bottom and spine. There is a crack in the internal binding after the front endpaper on Vol IV as well as a mark on the front cover. The previous owner’s name (Dave Harris, Deputy State Game Warden, Deadwood S.D.) is stamped on the front and back endpapers and also along the book bottom. All pages are tight with no tears or water damage but have light age toning.
